Another mini mini quilt finished in an hour and a half :)
This time I used my Fruit Basket - Pear pattern. I love the fabric for the pear, it is so cut that I used for the backing as well. How do you like it? It finishes at 5" square. Don't you think this just screams SUMMER !!!
Lately I have noticed a lot of my quilting friends on Facebook have been using the hastag #MMminimini and I was curious. It turned out that Make Modern has a Mini mini quilt challenge going on and I had to make a mini mini quilt when I saw it. As it says on their webpage:
It's quite simple to play along.
So that is what I did today when I got home from work. I used my Scrappy Christmas Tree block since it is just 4" square and perfect for a little mini mini quilt.
Here is the outcome, do you like it? I loved making it. I have always loved making small quilts, specially baby quilts and mug rugs but this is the smallest "quilt" I have ever made :) It took such a short time, I started right after work and finished before I made dinner!! I think I will have to make more.
So check out #MMminimini and look at all the lovely mini mini quilt that people have made.
I have been so busy and tiered after getting back to work after almost 2 years of being a housewife in Japan. My anemia and iron deficiency in the beginning of the year isn't helping but I think I am finally getting used to it. I have not been able to sew in the evenings like I thought I would be able to, I have just been too tiered. But today when I put the laundry on the line I realized we don't have a Clothespin bag at this house. YES!!!!! An opportunity to make something! So of course when I had a free hour this afternoon I made one.
In other sewing news I can't make the block swap that I had planned :(
It was just too ambitious of me to try.
When everything is settled again, probably this autumn, I will try again :)
This morning I made another butterfly block. I hope to make some more today and tomorrow.
I got the pattern from Sew me something good but the measurements didn't quite add up but I don't know if it was the pattern or me. Anyway, I ended up with a beautiful butterfly and I am going to make more with this method, I love Half-Square-Triangles.
Just as i finished the butterfly my sister came running inside to tell me there was a whale just outside the shore and I should come to see it.
I don't have a good camera with a big lens so you can't see it good, since it had swam away by the time I got outside. But I took this picture from our front lawn. Not a bad view :)
Now that it is almost a week since we left Japan I think it's about time to tell you where I am. I am on a small island in north of Iceland called Hrísey. I grew up on this island and my sister still lives here. We are staying with her and her family for a while and tonight the two of us took a walk around the village.
I think Hrísey is one of the most beautiful places on earth, so peaceful and quiet.
We still have a lot of snow in the mountains that surround us but no snow in the village it self.
Would you like to read more about this beautiful place? http://www.hrisey.is/
Today was a busy day. I started my butterfly blocks, 2 down - 28 to go ;)
First of all, we are living with my sister and her family for a few days so mornings are busy time, with 4 kids, 4 adults and sometimes more when my youngest sister is here also. Today was a little cold but still beautiful weather so the kids were playing outside a lot. That gave me a little time to start my blocks and I made these two. When I get my sewing machine I will free motion quilt antennae, maybe some "tail" and my name on all the blocks.
These blocks are very simple because I don't have my sewing machine but an old one that my sister has. I also didn't have a printer so I could not print out my pattern to do my FPP, these I just eye-balled. How ever I intend to make them very beautiful with some added features, either by thread or appliqué.
Tomorrow I start a temporary work at the kindergarten but I still intend on finishing my 30 blocks and send them for the end of the month :)
In early April I signed up for a block swap. My first. The trouble was I had to sell my sewing machine a few days later because of the move. Now I am in Iceland and I was going to be so quick with these 30 blocks now in may. BUT, I forgot me other sewing machine in Reykjavik when I went to the north of Iceland. And I am not going back in a while.
I think I can work it out and get the sewing machine soon. Until then I will use my sisters machine. Then it is just a question if I can make 30 x 12" blocks with butterflies in less than 3 weeks :)
I will of course let you know how it is going and show you the result, can't wait to start after the weekend :)
Here are some of the blocks I want to try to make:
Most of these are paper piecing but I also want to try some applique but I haven't search enough to find something I like. I might even design a few butterflies myself.
I am sorry I haven't been active for a while now. In April we had little to no internet connection and even less free time. We were very busy backing since we just moved back to Iceland!! After 20 months in Japan we moved back to Iceland on Tuesday. We are still recovering from the time difference and adjusting to the cold :)
Right now we are in Reykjavik but we will go to the north tomorrow and stay with my family for a while. After that we will see.
Before the trip home we stayed 3 nights in Tokyo. We went to Ueno park and the zoo. On the flight home Margret was so good, she didn't want out help with anything, just like to play her games on our tablet and watch movies. She is getting so big and independent.
Now we are relaxing at my in-laws until tomorrow when we go to the north.
There I will be reunited with my sewing machine and can start to sew again and I can't wait. Until I get something finished I want to share these pictures with you. It is a baby quilt I gave to a friend just before we left Japan :)
